Discover Arcahaie
Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, Arcahaie holds a special place in Haiti’s heart. Explore the essence of our beloved city.
JEAN JACQUES DESSALINES
In May 1803, in the city of Arcahaie, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and the leaders of the Haitian Revolution created the Haitian flag, a powerful symbol of unity and resistance. During the Congress of Arcahaie, Dessalines ordered the removal of the white stripe from the French tricolor, representing the rejection of colonial rule. The remaining blue and red colors were joined together to symbolize the unity between Black and mixed-race Haitians fighting for freedom.
BANANA PLANTATIONS IN ARCAHAIE
Banana cultivation has long been an important agricultural activity in Arcahaie, supported by the region’s fertile plains, abundant water resources, and favorable tropical climate. For generations, banana plantations have provided livelihoods for local farmers, strengthened regional commerce, and contributed to food security in western Haiti. Rooted in traditional farming practices passed down through families, banana production in Arcahaie reflects resilience, sustainability, and the deep connection between the community and its land.
ARCAHAIE
Arcahaie is a historic coastal city in western Haiti, north of Port-au-Prince. Known as the City of the Flag, it is where the Haitian flag was created in May 1803 during the Congress of Arcahaie under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. A center of agriculture, especially the bananas. Arcahaie symbolizes unity, resilience, and national pride.
CULTURAL HERITAGE
Arcahaie preserves strong oral traditions through storytelling, music, and communal celebrations. Spirituality plays a major role, blending Christianity with traditional Vodou, deeply rooted in community life. Its cultural heritage reflects resilience, unity, and the living spirit of Haiti.
NATURAL BEAUTY
Natural beauty of Arcahaie is defined by its lush green hills, rolling mountains, and vibrant vegetation that stretch as far as the eye can see. The landscape reflects a land rich in life, freshness, and balance, offering a sense of peace and connection to nature. This untouched environment highlights Arcahaie as a place of renewal, abundance, and quiet strength, where nature remains a central part of everyday life.
